Program Overview

The Bonz Beach Farms Seasonal Internship Program is a hands-on agricultural, stewardship, and life-skills experience designed for individuals who want to learn, work, and contribute meaningfully on a working Northern Michigan farm.

This program emphasizes:

  • Real farm work with real outcomes
  • Responsibility, discipline, and work ethic
  • Stewardship of land, food, and systems
  • Learning by doing, not observing

This is not a retreat, vacation, or passive learning program.

Interns may apply for any number of weeks during Spring, Summer, or Fall, based on availability and fit.


Internship Groups

The program is structured into three distinct groups to ensure proper expectations, safety, and productivity.


Group A: Youth Interns (Ages 13–17)

  • Exposure to agriculture
  • Responsibility and teamwork
  • Hands-on learning
  • Supervision: High
  • Workload: Light to Moderate
  • 4–6 hours per day
  • 4–5 days per week
  • Homeschool students
  • Farm-curious teens
  • Youth seeking structured summer experience

  • No heavy machinery
  • No chemical handling
  • No unsupervised equipment or infrastructure work
  • All tasks performed under direct supervision

Group B: Adult Interns (Ages 18+)

  • Skill-building

  • Workload: Moderate to High
  • 6–8 hours per day
  • 5–6 days per week

Group C: Advanced Adult Interns (Ages 18+, 3+ Years Farming Experience)

  • Advanced agricultural practice
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on farming experience
  • Comfort with long workdays
  • Independent problem-solving ability
  • Respect for tools, land, and systems

Experience must be clearly documented in the application.

  • Operate independently after orientation

Group C interns are not staff, but they are trusted contributors.

Is this a paid internship?

This is a room-and-board internship. Interns receive housing, meals, training, and hands-on experience in exchange for their work on the farm. There is no monetary compensation.

How long can I stay?

Interns may apply for any length of time, from one week to multiple months, depending on availability, fit, and capacity. Longer stays are encouraged when possible, but not required.

Do I need farming experience to apply?

Not necessarily.

  • Group A (ages 13–17): No experience required
  • Group B (ages 18+): Experience helpful but not required
  • Group C (ages 18+ with 3+ years experience): Prior farming experience is required

Applicants are placed based on age, experience, and demonstrated readiness to work.

What costs am I responsible for?

Interns are responsible for:

  • Travel to the farm
  • Personal expenses
  • Visa arrangements (for international interns)

Bonz Beach Farms provides housing, meals, and airport pickup from Alpena County Regional Airport if needed.

What is daily life like on the farm?

Days are structured around real farm work, typically starting in the morning and involving outdoor, physical tasks in changing weather conditions. Interns work alongside others, share meals, follow house rules, and have evenings free to rest or recharge.

This experience is best suited for people who enjoy purposeful work, simple living, and being part of a working farm community.

Do my parents or guardians need to approve my participation?

Yes.

All applicants under 18 must have written parental or guardian consent on file before being accepted. Parents or guardians will also provide emergency contact information.

Will I be supervised at all times?

Yes.

Youth interns work under direct adult supervision at all times. Tasks are age-appropriate and designed to be safe, educational, and productive. Youth interns are never assigned heavy machinery, chemical handling, or unsupervised work.

What does a typical day look like for youth interns?

Youth interns generally work 4–6 hours per day, 4–5 days per week. Tasks may include light farm work, assisting with harvests, organizing produce, learning about maple syrup production, and helping with market preparation. There is time built in for rest, meals, and learning.

Does Bonz Beach Farms sponsor visas?

No.

Bonz Beach Farms does not provide visa sponsorship or legal immigration services. International interns are fully responsible for securing the appropriate visa to participate.

What support is provided once I arrive in the U.S.?

The farm provides:

  • Housing and meals
  • Training and supervision
  • Airport pickup from Alpena County Regional Airport if requested in advance

Travel costs, visa costs, and personal expenses remain the intern’s responsibility.

Is English required?

Yes.

International applicants must have conversational English proficiency sufficient to:
